Elul – Day 26

Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will climb to heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and let us hear it so that we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. (Deut. 30:11-14)

Are there things in your life that you find too difficult or beyond your reach? Do you think that the Creator of the Universes’ commandments are simply too difficult to obey? Take heart, dear friend, it is not – it is near to you – even in your heart to do the right thing!

Why are many of these messages all about doing the right thing? Because to do the right thing is to please the One whom you say you serve. To do the right thing is the godly thing and will always be obeying the instructions He has given us in the words He had Moses write down.

God is near. When going through the month of Elul it is the overwhelming feeling that wraps us in that blanket is that He is near … He is in the field, waiting for us to come out and join him. It is the feeling that we get from reading the stories in the bible from beginning to end about the faith our ancestors possessed.  Our ancestors, during those days, didn’t rely on cathedrals, or churches, or poignant theologies from every professing scholar – no they simply believed that God was their God – he was there for everyone – everywhere.  They believed that He was right there with them! It was a relationship of the closest kind.

Have we come so for technologically, and intellectually that we have forgotten that it is a FIELD that we are going out to and will engage in the most awesome conversations with our King, our friend, our bridegroom, our parent? It is a field….not a desk, not a computer room, but a field. Think about that and let it sink in.

Ask yourself: Have you walled yourself off into a place where you think you are safe? Behind a computer screen, a text, an email? Consider that you are not operating out of safety, you are operating out of fear. Standing anything but face-to-face is to stand in fear.

Exercise for the day: Be honest with yourself, would you rather text or email when you know that a face to face enounter is what needs to be done? Think of one person today that you could meet – even for a few minutes – to repair or encourage a relationship.
