ElulWhat all is involved in getting ready for the month of Elul … a time when we examine the deeds of our past year? Well, it’s probably as much or as little as one wants to invest in it. It can be one of the most reflective and rewarding times or it can pass you by in the blink of an eye.

For the past ten years I’ve marked this time as a special season to prepare for the Yamim Nora’im, the Days of Awe, with the hope of  getting my spiritual house in order. This is the time when the “King is in the field” and I certainly am going to run out to meet him! No matter what.

This season of teshuvah (repentance) begins on the first day of Elul and usually ends at Yom Kippur, although some carry it thru until the end of Sukkot. This is a time when we examine ourselves and then ‘turn’ (shuv) back towards God. These days are also called Yemei Ratzon (יְמֵי רָצוֹן) or Days of Favor.

Why would they be called ‘Days of Favor’? Well, tradition has it that it was during this time when Moses had ascended Mt. Sinai for the last time to intercede for Israel after the Golden Calf incident. On Yom Kippur, 40 days after he ascended, he returned with the second set of tablets and the Holy One’s assurance of forgiveness. These 40 days are days that can transform your life … so let’s get ready!

  • Shine up and get that shofar ready!
  • If you have never journaled before, this is a good time to start – you’ll be surprised at what you write down.
  • Start thinking about the past year … how do you think you did?

Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near. Let the wicked man forsake his way, and the perverse man his thoughts, and let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon (Isaiah 55: 6-7

Yes–for certain this will also go in the book that you will be writing. And it will simply soooooo easy as you already have most or maybe even all of the chapter written.

We will be the first to purchase the book so put us down for a pre-order.

    Love you—

I can’t get the post for “The Month of Elul” to open up to read it. Not sure if it is on your end or mine.
    Thanks.
