This evening at sundown begins the first day of the month of Elul, and it is a very special time for those of us that are looking forward to spending time together during the fall Feast Days of the LORD. What you say? The LORD has FALL feast days? Yep, he sure does. We’ll cover those as we go along. But today I want to focus on ‘this’ day…the first day of Elul.

The sixth month of the Biblical calendar (late summer/early fall), is the month set apart for repentance, teshuvah. Basically, what it is for is a set apart time for one to examine themselves and to become spiritually prepared for the coming High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur).  It’s kind of like our Gregorian calendar’s side kick to making resolutions for  the New Year.

This time period runs anywhere from 40 to 60 days. When I first was introduced to this special I am my belovedtime to reflect on who and what I am over the last year, I began with the 60 days – it came in the form of a book written by Rabbi Jacobson and it was called “60 Days – A Spiritual Guide to the High Holy Days” … it still serves me well to this day. It helped get me intune to ‘me’ and who I am and who I am meant to be according to the Creator’s plan. It asked the hard questions, gave me a bit of history for the day, and encouraged me to look deeper to become all that I could be. Of course, I added another layer as I looked through the eyes of one who believes in the first century Messiah that came and made it all possible!

The beginning of this month of Elul is the key to turning the key to the inner parts of the heart. The Hebrew letters that make up the word ELUL is aleph, lamed, vav and lamed. They are an acronym for the phrase (from the biblical song of Songs) ani l’dodi v’dodi li. That sing-songy verse means “I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me.” What a beautiful, lovely and romantic phrase. Say it over many times during this month as we draw closer to our Creator and repair the relationships between Him and the rest of His creation.

Remember, they say that this is the month where the ‘King is in the field’ – he is more accessible to us than at any other time during the year. Let us run out to meet him! What? You are holding back? You are afraid? Why? He has never turned his back on us – never! It is our turn, and all we need to do is turn ourselves around and realize that He is waiting…simply waiting for us to turn around! That is the key that opens oh so many doors! If we would but only look at each other ‘face to face’ see HIM in each others eyes, we will see HIS inner essence in each gaze.

This is a time of beginning, a time of restoration, a time of renewal! Let’s reconnect with our Creator, ourselves and each other! Let’s begin to break the damaging patterns that hold us hostage! IT IS ELUL!!!
