It’s Called A Journey
No matter how long you have put foot to ground, it’s been one journey after another. A journey of being a toddler, pre-teen, teen, young adult and finally on your own as you grapple through adulthood.
Each and every one of those journeys can feel like a life-time and how
you navigate each and every one will make your life easier or not.
Personally,
my first three journey’s were pretty care-free and full of love, joy
and peace. Coming from a small town – at the time called a ‘village‘ – it was filled with family, friends, and many relatives. The 50’s, and 60’s were an idyllic time overflowing with new music (Beatles, Elvis, John Denver), new dance moves (the twist, the pony, the swim) and a beginning era of independence. There was Woodstock in the late 60’s, then the Vietnam War, and more young people demanding to be heard.
The 70’s seemed to be a changing pivot in American history. There was Watergate, Roe vs Wade, Vietnam protests, and the death of Elvis. During
this time, my journey was learning how to step into adulthood, being
newly married and navigating through those a new set of rules. Much of
what was happening on the world stage – and America’s went unnoticed, as
this momma didn’t really have time to watch the evening news on TV. But things changed.
The 80’s brought
so much more technology – the boys got computers (with black screens
and green text), the internet came into existence, the Soviet Union began to collapse, a Royal wedding took place, a movie-star became President (and one of the best!). There were so many things that I do remember during this season of change – watching the Berlin wall come down, pictures of the Titanic being raised, and the Challenger
exploding. But remember, all these things were filtered through the
television – no iphones, no tablets, no laptops – just TV. And many of
us were glued to that screen.
Oh….and let’s not forget the 90’s and 2000’s … just a few of those were Amazon, Mandella, LA riots, Google, Space News, OJ, Harry Potter. Then came the ipods and more, Survivor, 9-11, Afghanastan and Iraq wars, the Columbia disaster, and Facebook launched – just to name a few.
Now…as I enter the last leg, I can see how all
those various journeys intersect and connect and have made me who I am
today. Raising two young boys, being a faithful wife for almost 50 years
(before my husband ended his journey), and now having more time on my
hands than needed……I can relish and appreciate each and every leg of my
journey. It has been a blessing to be able to get through some of those
legs, but it has been well worth it. Maybe, God willing, there will be another leg right around the corner.
Until that appears, all I can say to you …. wherever you are in your journey of life … stay focused, stay tuned in, and never give up!
